Clips from The Lameness Trainer have led to a new publication in the Veterinary Record!

In this study, Dr Sandra Starke and Dr Maarten Oosterlinck examined the “Reliability of equine visual lameness classification as a function of expertise, lameness severity and rater confidence”. This study was made possible through the Wetenschappelijke Vereniging voor de Gezondheid van het Paard vzw (www.wvgp.org) who enabled Maarten to gather ratings for a series of animations during a presentation. Results were surprising, highlighting difficulty across experience levels to correctly classify both, sound and lame horses. This study illustrated that even experienced veterinarians struggled with the greyzone of mild asymmetry, resulting in incorrectly classing lame horses as sound and sound horses as lame. Mistaking sound horses for lame was especially prevalent in the assessment for hindlimb lameness.
